Returning Home to Grieve in Peace « Thread Started on Jan 5, 2009, 9:59pm »
Drake, after three days of walking and running, finally arrived at the apartment building. He looked up at it for a moment then headed inside. He walked up the stairs then once he reached the apartment door he paused and stared at the doorknob. He was afraid to go inside, for fear he would be upset. But he already knew that would happen, and he accepted it.
He'd thought about Kai the entire trip, hoping somehow she's be at home, like nothing had happened. She'd be happy to see him and he'd be happy to see her. They'd eat dinner together, cuddle and say goodnight to each other and go to bed. But he knew that he was only dreaming as he stared and waited in front of the door.
Drake took a deep breath and turned the doorknob. It was unlocked because they left in such a hurry after Kai had been taken and the plan was set.
He pushed the door open only to find stacks of his boxes in the entryway and his violin case on top, "Oh...so mom did remember..." he thought. His mood was dead and dry, nothing much to be excited about. "Well...at least I have clothes..." he said quietly. He walked into the living room and looked around. It hadn't changed. The living room was always clean and tidy. But then he turned toward the bedroom and stopped.
He thought about it for a moment and then finally walked it. it was just as they left it. Clothes strew on the floor, a pile here, a pile there, the bed was a mess, and the blanket Laurie used was hanging half off the bed. He began picking up clothes and throwing them into a big pile by the door to remind himself to wash them. Then he made the bed and folded the stray blanket and threw the pillow that was on the floor back on the bed. A sudden feeling of emptiness hit him like a sack of bricks and he found himself sitting on the edge of the bed with his head in his hands crying.
Drake hated crying, but he couldn't help it. He loved her so much and she was gone and he had to watch it all. She was stabbed, thrown off the side of a building, and turned to dust in his arms. He hated thinking about it, but that traumatic event wouldn't leave him even if he wanted to forget. He didn't want to forget about her, but by not wanting to forget about her, he had to relive the experience in his head over and over again and it killed him inside.
After a while he managed to get himself together and he got up and went to the entryway where his boxes sat, stacked up nicely. He grabbed one, and took it to the bedroom and set the box in the corner by the window. It was slightly heavy but was a little mushy, "This must be a clothes box..." he said softly. he opened the box and sure enough, it was packed full of clothes, crumpled or folded. He went over to his set of drawers and began filling them with his clothes, then once that box was finished we went and got the last box of clothes and finished filling his dresser drawers.
He threw the empty boxes into a pile in the corner and carried some heavy boxes obviously filled with books into the room. He opened it and then just pushed it aside, he didn't have a bookcase to put them on so he decided it wasn't worth the effort to take them all out and then someday moving them again.
Drake walked back into the entry way and found his last remaining three boxes, one was filled with books and sheet music, the other was just random crap he threw in the box before he left along with his cell phone and laptop. He pushed the box of books into the corner like the other then set both random crap filled boxes on the bed and opened both of them up. He took out his laptop and charger and set it on the bed, then dug out his cell phone and charger as well and plugged the phone in to charge it so he could receive calls. Which when the phone turned on, he had over thirty voice mails, one hundred texts and a bazillion missed calls, all from people he went to school with when he was in Germany. They all were confused on where he'd disappeared to.
"I don't have time to go through all this stuff..." he said almost in an annoyed tone. He sighed heavily and found the uniform that a friend of his had borrowed Kai. It was in the bottom of the box of random stuff. He pulled it out and walked over to the dresser. The uniform was folded neatly and had some dust on it from some other items that were thrown in the box on top of it. He recalled the memory of when he took Kai to see his school, and that just made him feel worse about the situation. He opened one of Kai's dresser drawers and set the green and white uniform in and he shut the drawer, not even looking at what else was in there. He sighed again sadly and felt the wave of grief come over him again but he managed to suppress it for the time being.
Drake grabbed his laptop and charger and sluggishly walked to the living room. He found a power outlet and plugged the charger in the wall and the laptop to charge it. He set the laptop on the coffee table and turned it on then left it to boot up. "I guess I have to find a job...I have mom and dad's credit card...well one of them but I can't use that to pay rent and utilities..." he mumbled to himself.
He got up from the couch and walked into the kitchen where empty glasses lined up along the sink. Drake sighed and started to wash them. Once he was finished and they were all put away except one, he used that glass and filled it to the brim with wine and he added a few blood tablets to it. He took the glass back to the living room with him and set it next to his laptop after he took a long sip of the mixture. The laptop was fully booted up and Drake's wallpaper had him, his roommate Alex, and about five more students, all of them dressed in the school's uniform. Drake stared at the wallpaper for a moment then he suddenly considered going back to school in Germany where he should have been in the first place before he came in search of Laurie, "I can't think that..." he said to himself, "I'm staying here...Laurie would be sad if I left and went over there..." He really did miss not going to school, but it was a decision he had to make, at least he had his violin with him, which was just the way he'd get a job.
He searched on the internet until he came across some local jobs with violinist openings, "Hmm..." he sighed and checked through many job listings until he came across one. It was a listing for a new violinist, and a pianist for the area's Ballet. The job looked promising enough so he sent in an application via internet and hoped for a phone call soon. "Hope?" he thought almost disgustedly, "Don't have much of that left..." He felt a little angry at himself as that horrible memory came back for another round of torture.
"I could have saved her if I wasn't so weak..." he thought angrily and hopelessly, "It was all my fault..." He stared down at the floor as he sat on the couch, then he closed his eyes for a moment to try and regain some control then opened them again. He sighed heavily and closed the laptop.
Drake took a long drink of the wine then got up from the couch and walked toward the window. The frozen heart they had drawn had been wiped away by then, so he drew two hearts and drew a 'D' in one and a 'K' in the other then breathed on the window to freeze them there. He stared at them blankly for about five minutes then whispered sadly, "I wish..." He closed the curtains, hiding the little drawing and went back to the coffee table and took another long drink of the wine. About three-quarters of the liquid was gone already.
Afterward he paced around the room for a while, trying to figure out what to do. There was no one around, no one to talk to face to face about the issue he was having, but no one would care anyway. Drake didn't have any friends near, they were all far away, but he couldn't tell human friends anyway because they wouldn't believe or understand him and what happened. He was stuck, he couldn't do anything but keep thinking about what happened and blame himself for letting it happen; he was frustrated.
"I hate this..." he thought, stopping in front of the coffee table to finish off the wine in the glass. He looked at the empty glass and walked back to the kitchen to refill it. He grabbed the wine bottle and poured himself another full glass, "Who am I kidding...I can't just go on with my life like nothing happened..." he said quietly to himself. He took a long drink of the wine then set it on the counter and dropped a couple more blood tablets into it. He leaned against the counter and stared at the doorway for a moment, then to the floor, "If Kai was here...I would have seen her by now..." Just as that thought crossed his mind, the nightmare memory came back once again and this time Drake didn't cry, he stared at the floor blankly. "I hate this..." he thought again, "Make them stop..." He was referring to the memories of Kai's final moments. They continued to eat at him.

Daniel slipped out of Kira's apartment into the hallway. Inside he had heard Drake and Kai's apartment door open and close and he wanted to see Kai again for a little bit to tell her about him and Kira. His shirt was unbuttoned and he wasn't wearing any shoes so his jeans lightly brushed against the floor and covered the top of his feet. He walked over tot he door and lightly knocked.

Drake looked to his right when he heard the knock on the door, "Who would be visiting...?" he thought. Then as he began to sift through all the people it could be at the door, he thought about Daniel and Kira. Either one of them could be behind that door, and they were the only two that Drake could think of that would get there so quickly because they were next door.
He set his drink down on the counter and walked slowly to the door. Drake stood and stared at the door handle then pushed it down and opened the door. Drake looked like a mess, his hair was unkempt, which it never was, and he just looked...depressed.
"Yes?" he mumbled, then he noticed the person who was standing before him, it was Daniel. How could he tell Daniel about Kai? He had to eventually...but after his last fight with Daniel...he didn't want to piss him off again.

When Drake opened the door his big smile turned into an awkward one. "Um...hey Drake." He said raising his hand in a small wave gesture. He was quiet for a moment and scratched the back of his head. "Listen...sorry about last time...I sort of got a little out of hand with that whole thing...and I didn't mean to so...will you forgive me?" He asked softly.
"But the main reason I came was to see Kai," He tired to look into the apartment, "Is she here?" He asked smiling slightly."

"Yeah yeah I forgive you..." he said plainly.
Once Daniel asked for Kai, Drake's moderate mood that he'd been keeping for about an hour turned for the worse, "No..." he said passively. "Of course she's not here! She's....she's...dead!" he thought sadly and angry simultaneously.

Daniel frowned a little at Drake's reply to his apologie.
"Oh? Well...when will she be back?" He asked in a confused tone. He noticed Drake seemed out of it, seemed upset. "Is...is something wrong?" He asked softly.

Drake shrugged, "I don't know when she's getting back..." he said passively again. He didn't want to tell Daniel...what if Daniel killed him or something. He couldn't trust how Daniel would react to something so heartbreaking.
Then he decided just to hint at it since he himself couldn't say the words 'Kai is dead.'
"She could get back later today...tomorrow...a week...a month...a year...I don't know..." he trailed off and he stared at the ground.

Daniel frowned slightly. "Did she leave you?" He asked softly. Slowly a terrifying thought crept into his mind. "Drake...," He said in a some what serious tone, "what happened..."

At that moment, he knew that Daniel caught onto what really happened and he couldn't beat around the bush anymore so he just went out and said it, "Kai...is..." he started. Drake struggled to say those words because he was afraid of what might happen to him upon saying those words. "K-Kai is...dead..." he whispered. An awful expression of sadness came over him. He didn't cry but he felt like it. Now he prepared for the worst, "Is he going to kill me now...?" he thought, "I guess it's better than living in agony..."

Drake couldn't look at Daniel, but he answered his question, "I tried...but allmost got killed myself...." he replied. He didn't have the energy to tell Daniel all what happened, but he could answer small questions. He still had that look of sadness, and it wouldn't go away anytime soon now.

Daniel's hands tightened into fists. "At least you tired..." He said softly, it sounded like he was trying to hold back tears as he spoke.
"Well...I have to go..." He said softly. As he turned a small tear ran down his cheek, but was quickly covered by his hair. He quickly went to Kira's apartment door and slipped back inside.

Drake looked up in just enough time to see Daniel leave. And once he did leave, Drake felt really bad. "I'm sorry, Daniel..." he whispered. he was trying to hold back tears as well, and he finally managed too.
He walked into the bedroom and lied down. He put his face in a pillow and just was still. he didn't want to move, he was trying to relax hismelf, but it was doing nothing for him. Saying "Kai is dead" killed him inside more than he wanted to. Those words ran through his head numerous times until it drove him to start crying again.
